Day 10 – September 8, 2016

Having completed the golden circle (Road 1) it was time to go to Reykjavík, where we would stay for the remainder of our Honeymoon.

We dropped our bags off at Fosshotel Lind so we could explore. It was cloudy, rainy and cold. Doug discovered a nearby record store, Lucky Records, where we purchased some vintage vinyl.

Icelandic Phallological Museum

Doug and I continued walking the streets, until we stumbled upon the Icelandic Phallological Museum. Curious, we purchased tickets to the world’s largest collection of penii!

PENIS GALORE!

It was super interesting, if you aren’t grossed out by every species of penis you can imagine preserved in jars of all sizes. We signed the guestbook and were on our way.

Bjórgarðurinn Beer Garden

It was cold and rainy here, so we sought out an area of refuge where could warm up with a nice alcoholic beverage. Doug found a beer garden, Bjórgarðurinn, located in Fosshotel Reykjavik. Unfortunately Bjórgarðurinn wasn’t open for another 20 minutes, so we grabbed a mixed drink at the hotel bar until we were allowed in. The hotel cocktails ended up being really unique – each drink had some sort of sprig! The beer garden reminded me of a NYC bar, with a very industrial look. We ordered flights and a cheese & olive tray. We lounged in big mismatched easy-chairs and enjoyed our snacks, but needed a real lunch.

Around the City & Meze Restaurant

Doug had researched a comic book store that he really wanted to visit – and it was worth it! The store was located on the outskirts of the city, in a plaza next to a gamer-meeting area (not sure what these are called, but card-duel areas). There were so many comic books, toys, costumes, etc. It was a blast!

We walked back towards the center of the city, where the streets were a mixture of paved and brick, with limited vehicle access. Even in the cold rain, there were tons of people out and about. There are huge cranes looming everywhere. There was so much to look at just walking around – beautiful buildings and statues everywhere!

Sprinkled among the beautiful structures is a Chuck Norris Grill and a Great Lebowski Bar, which looked like tons of fun, but not really the cultural experience we were looking for. We settled for lunch at Meze restaurant, which was Lebanese (Doug’s heritage). We continued to walk around, stopping in random shops as we pleased.
